Overview

This is a headache which has developed within seven days of the injury or after regaining consciousness. They can occur even in minor events that do not cause harm to the brain. They tend to fade over the following weeks or months. Acute PTH should normally improve with painkillers and rest. However in some individuals the headache may remain for many months (> 3 months). This is called chronic PTH and can be more difficult to treat.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

PTH can resemble different types of headaches, but the most common headache is migraine. It can be associated with several symptoms, including concentration, memory problems, dizziness and fatigue. Studies have shown that it can resolves within three months, however some patients experience a persistent PTH. The duration of the headache is not necessarily related to the severity of the trauma.

Treatments & Key Areas We Specialise In

  • Treatment

Medication is the most effective treatment for PTH and this will depend on the type of headache. For example if it resembles migraine then treatment will be as per migraine patients. Non-drug treatment including physiotherapy, can also be considered as well as education and support.
